Photos from the 2001 Solid Waste
& Recycling Symposium

Left, Dr. Robert Boyd, this year's
keynote luncheon speaker, filled the audience with inspiration.
Boyd had attendees laughing when he gave examples of
people's attitudes at work. It boiled down to why
many people are not happy at work, and why job
satisfaction, affection and a feeling of belonging are
important in the workplace. Unfortunately, Landy
Chase (keynote for Thurs. morning) was not able to fly
in due to the September 11 attacks. Right, vendors
and attendees enjoy visiting during one of the many
meals!

Left, Member Peggy
Cavanaugh accepts the 2001 Leadership Award from Board
Member Tom Beauchamp (Langdon) on behalf of Spirit Lake
Tribe. Cavanaugh has helped the reservation in
many ways from community clean-up days to her commitment
and belief in solid waste and recycling issues.
Her family and friends were also present to award her
with a star quilt, a Native American tradition, for
leadership in their community. Right, Tom Moore of
Spartan Promotional Group, accepts the 2001 Vendor
Choice Award presented by Board Member Mary Chamberlain
(RW Beck). Congratulations!
Eric Laufenberg (left),
son of member Mark Laufenberg (Minnkota Recycling,
Fargo) and Chrissy Oihus, daughter of Bob Oihus (right)
of Refuse Disposal
Service (Grafton, ND), received the NDSWMA's 1st 2001
Scholarship Award (presented by President Rick Gillund
of Enderlin). Congratulations!

Left, solid waste and
recycling sessions brought forth
discussion about what's happening in various cities
across North Dakota and into other states. Before
Wed.'s lunch, City of Bismarck employees Galen Bren and
Wilbert Goldade (right) try out an alternative fuel vehicle in the
parking lot of the Ramada Inn. Look out!

Mary Chamberlain,
Harold Pharoh (Excel Manufacturing) Glen "Dad"
Fuhrman (City of Enderlin) and Karen Jackson (Spirit
Lake Tribe) try to get the right answer to a "Name
That Tune" game that followed the awards
banquet.

The weather was
beautiful for the Fourth Annual Golf Tournament in Grand
Forks. Left, team members Terry Ludlum
(Fargo Cass Public Health), Duane Haugen, Randy Hanson
and Delmar Ruff (all of the City of Fargo) enjoy a photo
shoot between holes. Right, Brian Meyer (Wastequip/Rayfo)
goes for the gold.
