Listserves
The
following are listserves that are open to the public
(some may be limited to public/government employees or
organizations, and not businesses). If you know of
any other great listserves, let
us know, and we will consider adding them below.
Recycling
Waste Reduction
Household Hazardous Waste
Composting
Recycling
For
sign up for this listserve, contact: Charles Heizenroth
at Heizenroth.Charles@epamail.epa.gov
(EPA's
national Jobs Through
Recycling (JTR) team) or
Beth
Grim (Eastern Research Group) at bgrim@erg.com.
The
purpose of this list server is to provide an open
discussion forum primarily for public and non-profit
recycling market developers.
Topics that are discussed
include: market
development program design, services, techniques,
management, publicity,
measurement, feedback solicitation, lessons learned,
finance, technical
assistance, resources, reviews, announcements, et
cetera.
When sending messages, please avoid the following:
(1) Sending a personal reply to all 200 subscribers
instead of the message originator.
(This is a feat easily accomplished by simply hitting
the "Reply" button
and neglecting to make the important change in the
"To" box before sending.)
(2) Forwarding a JTRnet message to a fellow subscriber
and have that person then
make mistake (1) above.
(3) Cutting and pasting anything into a message that is
not ASCII text. (Also
avoid sending a message originally typed on lines longer
than 72
characters.
They end up looking like this the whole way through.)

Waste
Reduction
The
Waste Prevention E-Mail Forum is a project of the
National Waste Prevention Coalition. This forum,
or "listserv," has
more
than 300
subscribers, mostly in the U.S. but in several other
countries as well. Most of the agencies,
organizations and businesses that are leaders in the
waste prevention movement are represented on the forum.
The forum was started in June, 1996.
We
define waste prevention loosely as reduction and reuse.
Recycling will not be discussed in this forum, except
when directly relevant to waste prevention. If
your main interest is recycling, there are other mailing
lists available for that (see above).
This
mailing list is aimed primarily at people whose work
deals with waste prevention. We invite everyone's
participation. Ask questions. Offer
insights. Pass along news. Our goal is to
advance waste prevention.
To
submit a comment, question or news item to the list,
just e-mail Tom
Watson, National Waste Prevention Coalition
Coordinator. Please include your name, your
organization (if any) and city.
A
searchable
archive of past postings is located on the Internet at
this address: http://www.reuses.com/nwpcarchive/
This address is also given at the top of every
installment.

Compost
- submitted by David Flora, U.S. EPA Region 7
I thought that the
Composting Discussion Group managed by the United States
Composting (USCC) was open only to USCC members only.
However, I found out
that the USCC discussion group is no longer restricted
to members of the
USCC. I spoke to Jim McNelly, the List Manager, and he
encouraged me to
promote it.
To
join, go to http://mailman.cloudnet.com/mailman/listinfo/compost
and complete
the subscription information section. You can view the
archives by clicking
on "Compost Archives" at that address. I
reviewed them and found
that 20-40 messages are posted each week. That's quite a
few but you can make
it more manageable by receiving a daily digest: only one
message a day! Simply check
this option when you subscribe. Here's a
sampling
of the types of questions that are posted:
"I
am the recycling coordinator for the Nevada Division of
Environmental Protection. I
am seeking assistance in process design
for
an operation processing non-source separated C&D
debris. I was
wondering if any one is being affected by the changes
the CIWMB made in its
exemption policies for schools-allowing only
100
cubic yards. . . as the upper limit of compost before
permitting is required.
Can anyone refer me to a
defined procedure or analytical
methodology
for determining how much elemental sulfur (or similar
material) to add to compost
to lower its pH? We make a dairy manure
compost."
Recently there have been reports from of compost causing
damage to vegetable gardens
and crops. Investigation has
revealed
that two persistent herbicides were the causes of the
damage: picloram and
clorpyralid.
Please note, this list is for policy makers and
professionals. "How to"
questions
for home composting are better directed to the public
home composting
discussion list not affiliated with the Composting
Council
located
at compost@lyris.cahe.wsu.edu.
Jim
McNelly, the List Manager, provided the following
information on the
listserv:
"You
are invited to join the Internet based Composting
Discussion Group managed
by the US Composting Council.
This
is a moderated list under the administration of the
Communications Committee
appointed by the Board of Directors of the US Composting
Council. This list is
designed to serve the needs of professionals in the
organic material
management industry. It is open to guests that are not
members of the
Composting Council. The topics on this list are limited
to subjects impacting
the composting industry such as policies, standards,
technical matters, etc. Discussions related to
composting methodologies,
environmental protection and the beneficial use of
organic materials are
welcome. Backyard composting, land application,
vermiculture,
mulching and sustainable agriculture are all appropriate
topics when addressed
in the arena of public policy.
This
is a "members only" list, meaning that
messages sent by non-subscribers
to the list will be held for approval by the list
manager. This is a way to
keep unsolicited mail "spam" off the list and
to keep the discussions
"on-topic". List
policy has a zero tolerance for "me too"
messages, private messages,
"thank you" messages, viruses, list
administrative discussions,
advertisements, off-topic messages, chain letters,
auto-reply messages, hoax
warnings, home composting "how to" questions,
messages posted to multiple
discussion groups, off-topic jokes,
trademark
infringements, copyright violations, illegal messages,
libel, slander,
overmuch quoting, personal news, attachments, an
attachment that
should have been included as text in a message, attacks
on individuals, and
any other message deemed not appropriate to a forum of
composting professionals.
If you are going to be away
from the office, do not send "auto-reply"
messages to the list.
Offenders will have their subscription
immediately
switched to "read only" status. The list
management software
may also remove individuals from the list on its own if
their e-mail account
is disabled. In order
to keep this a friendly list, we ask that the members
maintain civility in
their communications. Challenging ideas is appropriate;
attacking persons or
businesses is not.
This
is a private list owned by the US Composting Council and
is not a public
forum. You are free to be off-topic and exercise your
rights to free speech
somewhere else. You
can only submit messages from the e-mail account you
subscribed under. If
you wish to submit messages from multiple accounts, you
may consider
subscribing to the list under both accounts and set one
to "no mail"
to avoid duplicate messages.
This
is not a forum for selling goods and services. Some
latitude is allowed,
including business information in signature files and
conversation relevant to the
discussion. Attachments
are not allowed because they may contain viruses. Long
messages or photos are not
welcome by some of our members, some of whom
are
overseas or have accounts that restrict the volume of
incoming attachments.
If possible, please include the information in the body
of
your e-mail
message instead.
Minor
breaches of etiquette will be responded to with a
private, personal
warning. Severe or multiple warnings can result in a
thirty day suspension
from the list. Repeated or an extreme violation will
result in permanent
removal from the list. Opinions
expressed by participants and members of the US
Composting Council,
List Managers, or the Board are their own and not
necessarily those of
the Council, its Foundation, Executive Committee,
Trustees or
the
Board of Directors.
Thank
you for your interest. Jim
